Note for B-slot research design students

Dear Students (B-Slot)

As promised in lectures, the overhead on qualitative tools.

NOTE:
With quantitative research we utilise internal validity and external validity as evaluative tools to assess the rigour of a research project. These tools are not applied to qualitative research. With qualitative research, credibility, transferability, dependability and confirmability are utilised as evaluative tools to assess the utility of a research project.

• Credibility: research needs to demonstrate that it was conducted in such a manner so as to ensure that the phenomena were accurately identified and described
• Transferability: demonstrating the applicability of one set of findings to another context
• Dependability: researcher attempts to account for changing conditions to the phenomenon chosen for research as well as changes in the design created by increasingly refined understanding of the setting
• Confirmability: is focused on whether the results of the research could be confirmed by another and places the evaluation on the data themselves

Searching for relevant Journal articles

1) Use Google Scholar to locate relevant articles
- If you are using the Wits system, there will be something next to the article to the effect, “Full text available @ wits” or similar.

2) Go to Wits homepage: http://web.wits.ac.za. Click on “Libraries” in Quickfinder. On Library homepage, click on “Research Resources”, then “Electronic Databases”, then “Title Listing”. Choose appropriate database, eg. Proquest, African Studies, EBSCO Host (Academic Search Premier), African Studies, SABINET.
- Full text articles are available on most databases now but if you need to access a journal, most Psychology journals are in the Wartenweiler or Cullen basements
